Some big changes are coming to Medicare Advantage in 2027: one major insurer has announced it will be exiting targeted plans, impacting around 600,000 members. If you’re one of the many affected, it’s important to remember that your Medicare eligibility remains intact—even if your Advantage plan is not renewed. Unless you actively choose a new plan, you’ll automatically return to Original Medicare.
The main enrollment period to review and switch your options runs from early to mid-fall, with any changes typically starting in the new year. There’s also a special enrollment window that stretches into early spring. For those moving back to Original Medicare, this transition opens up a special protected window for getting Medigap coverage—beginning 60 days before your Advantage plan ends and closing no more than 63 days after.
When reviewing your coverage choices, it’s essential to look beyond just premiums. Take time to compare doctors, hospitals, drug formularies, copays, deductibles, and your maximum out-of-pocket costs. Sometimes a $0 premium comes with tradeoffs that aren’t obvious at first glance. If you’re feeling uncertain, free and unbiased counseling is available through state assistance programs, and it’s always wise to double-check your decisions with Medicare or a trusted adviser.
As someone who guides clients through these choices every day, I know how confusing this process can feel. My personal approach is all about making things clear and helping you feel truly confident in your coverage—so you can focus on what matters most: your health and peace of mind.
